MILAN DESIGN WEEK GUIDE OUTSIDE THE DISTRICTS: THE CITY AROUND AND DESIGN
Design beyond the Herculean columns of downtown Milan

It’s April 17, 2023 and Milan Design Week is finally about to begin. Arriving just a few months — and not a year — after the last edition of Fuorisalone, design returns to its customary spaces, herding designers, industry professionals, the press and curious visitors within iconic design districts. But the surrounding city has much more to offer, where the widespread event scheduled until April 23 is a calendar of events upon events that open the doors of countless locations. So with Google Maps in hand, we head to the suburbs. From Calvairate to Porto di Mare, the subway is on our side along with trams ready to scale the evanescent confines of the city center, sweeping far and wide to catch exciting exhibitions, ignite the imagination with installations, and plan a future with design. These are the areas of Milan to explore — the ones broadening the horizon of design in the city.

STILL NOW: THE DINNER - ZONA VIALE ZARA

Address: Villa Mirabello, Via Villa Mirabello 6

The fferrone brand invites everyone to dinner. By opening the doors to an old Milanese villa, the label has staged a convivial moment between art and design. Framed by a theatrical setting in which time seems to have lost all meaning, the glass creates a monochromatic and evocative mise-en-place that goes well with the retro atmosphere. But here, the memory of the 1600s is linked to the contemporary. Design and architecture therefore speak to each other once again through a visual and emotional exchange transcending the confines of cultures that don’t know each other.
